Perungulam Perumal Temple Guide – Timings & History by Vishnu Balaji Travels

The Perungulam Perumal Temple Guide – Timings & History introduces devotees to one of the most sacred Nava Tirupati temples located in Perungulam Village, near Srivaikuntam in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Sri Mayakoothar Perumal, also worshipped as Sri Srinivasa Perumal, this ancient temple is one of the revered 108 Divya Desams praised by Nammalvar in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham.

The temple is famous for its association with Shani Bhagavan (Saturn) among the Nava Tirupati temples. Pilgrims visit this shrine seeking relief from Shani Dosha, career obstacles, financial difficulties, and delays in important life events. The peaceful atmosphere, large temple tank, and rich Vaishnavite traditions make this temple an important stop during the Nava Tirupati Yatra.

Perungulam Perumal Temple History

The Perungulam Perumal Temple History dates back over a thousand years to the Pandya Kingdom. Temple legends describe how sages worshipped Lord Vishnu here and received His divine vision in the enchanting form of Mayakoothar, the Lord who performs the divine cosmic dance.

The name Mayakoothar means “The Divine Dancer who performs mysterious cosmic plays.” According to tradition, the Lord defeated evil forces and celebrated His victory through a divine dance, earning this unique name.

Over the centuries, Pandya rulers expanded the temple with granite sanctums, mandapams, and beautifully carved pillars. Today, it remains one of the most visited temples in the Nava Tirupati circuit.

Why is He Called Sri Mayakoothar Perumal?

Unlike many Vishnu temples where the Lord is worshipped primarily as the protector of the universe, here the deity is celebrated as Sri Mayakoothar Perumal, symbolizing the Lord’s divine dance after the triumph of righteousness.

Many devotees also worship Him as Sri Srinivasa Perumal, believing that His blessings bring prosperity, peace, and happiness to families.
